When you book a family session with me, I send you a small guide of what to wear for your session. The guide includes ideas for outfit styles and colors-for you, your hubs and the kids! Here’s a little sneak peak of what that guide has to offer, featuring my husband and kids!
I am a big fan of dressing up for sessions. It helps everyone to have a little better behavior and attitude. We act differently depending on what we wear. How do you sit when you are in your most cozy PJ’s? Probably pretty different than how you would sit in your most fancy date night dress. You carry yourself with intention, and you just feel more confident!
Bold colors are lots of fun, however they tend to make your clothes the object of the picture, not your beautiful faces! Soft tones, muted colors go well with just about any background, and are very flattering on the skin.
For the “men-folk”- use fun layers! A dress shirt and tie, plus a vest or a sweater with a sports coat looks so sophisticated, and brings a a fun variety as you go through your session.
For the ladies- Mama, if you’ve been wanting to splurge on something fancy- now is the time! (hit the thrift stores if you have time!). Long flowy dresses and skirts bring a lot of great movement to the camera. Plus, if you are going to have little ones running around you during shoot, you don’t want something short that might get grabbed up! Sitting in a long dress is also much easier than something shorter. Three-quarter length sleeves are so flattering, they slim the arms; instead of sleeveless or spaghetti straps, which can have the opposite effect.
Pretty simple! Ultimately, find a style you love (my Pinterest board has some great ideas), start with what you have and go from there. Don’t let the stress of outfits take from the excitement of your session. I took the above pictures of my sweet family kind of spur of the moment, and as you can see my husband has no layers and I’m not in the billow-y type of dress I’d really love to be in. (Being 20 weeks pregnant will do that to ya).
Remember, you’re never fully dressed without a smile!
